IKEA experienced its first true environmental crisis when it found itself in breach of a new Danish law regulating formaldehyde emissions from particleboard which is used frequently in furniture. "The fine, however, was minimal compared to the damage done to IKEA’s image and sales, which temporarily dropped by about 20% in the Danish market," says a case study of the company's ultimate adoption of the Natural Step in 1991 (Lane).
Since this time, IKEA has embarked on a process of environmental problem-solving. Over the years, IKEA has made substantial changes in their processes.

In 2000, IKEA established a code of conduct known as "The IKEA Way on Purchasing Home Furnishing Products" [IWAY]. IWAY identifies the rules for working conditions, minimum wages, overtime rates, trade union representation rights, waste management, chemical management, and emissions to air and water. More information regarding IKEA’s IWAY initiative can be found in their Social and Environmental Responsibility Brochure (http://www.ikea-group.ikea.com/repository/documents/922.pdf).

Today, IKEA boasts a slogan of "Low price but not at any price" indicating the importance the company places on social and environmental responsibility.r locals too careless
